I read while 3DS Max shall be a pretty nice piece of Software when it comes to complex 3D modelling, Maya shall outshine it in case of rigging and animation and it shall be far superior. Is it viable to first model your (game) character in 3DS Max and Import it to Maya for animation and rigging, since both of the shall be better at the things mentioned above. Or shall I model and rig/animate using the same program (considering I own both and don't need to buy any additional licenses)? What will benefit my workflow more and what will provide better results?

When people say Maya is better, it is the workflow they are talking about. The UI, key shortcuts, functionality all flows together. It's why people prefer editing their UVs in 3dcoat for example. The concepts all stay the same though no matter if you use Blender, 3dsmax, Modo etc. At the end of the day you are still creating a rig by attaching bones together, and then weight painting on to the mesh. If you have both, then try out the rigging in both, then stick with the one that works for you.

Im having the same problem with my scene too. Thought id post under this thread rather than create another one. I'd never model a character without setting the scale right first but i have to work with someone elses file and they didn't do it properly. Im using max 8. I tried grouping the whole character and scaling it, both normally and with an xref but nothing happens - it just gets moved cos the pivot is in some crazy position.

I tried changing the units setup in the file to cm (instead of inches) to make the scale right, but when i import it into my scene all the skinning is stuffed up. Does anyone know why any of these methods aren't working? Is there another way to fix it? 1.Cut the skin Modifier 2.Remove all links from biped to the mesh or vice versa(U may have linked hair or caps to the biped head bone) 3.Destroy the character object if u have one.

Move all the mesh parts 100 units in X and remeber that. 5.Go to figure mode and scale(remember the value as u need it to put on other parts of the mesh) ur biped to the desired level and exit figure mode. 6.Move all ur mesh parts back. 7.Paste the skin mod back, ur character might squash a bit but dont worry.Just chk 'Always deform ' option off and on again.
