Related to that, I see that there is a Concert piano patch in both the Fantom X and the Sonic cell. Is this in any. In order to save on ROM space, Roland created the piano using less waveforms and employed a common technique where one waveform is shared among several adjacent notes.
The main piano in SonicCell (Rich Grand) is based on the same waveforms as the SRX-11, RD700SX, FP7 and FP4. Unlike those, the SC piano is not of the each-note-sampled variety. In order to save on ROM space, Roland created the piano using less waveforms and employed a common technique where one waveform is shared among several adjacent notes. The SC Rich Grand will have the same overall tone as the SRX-11 based pianos, but a trained ear will be able to hear differences.
Not sampling each note creates several artifacts. When played chromatically/scales, if your ear is sensitive to it, you can hear these groupings of the same waveforms (some can stand out more than others).
A slightly out of tune note will be out of tune across several notes. The piano can take on a uniformity/sameness that makes it sound unnatural. The wood sound changes pitch chromatically within the grouping of notes where as it should stay the same 'pitch' across the entire instrument.
To be fair, using the same waveform across multiple notes is a very common technique. Yamaha, Kurzweil, actually everyone does it. Risk Palisade Crack. In fact Roland is the only hardware manufacturer to provide each-not-sampling on their best acoustic and electric piano emulations. Whether it bugs you or not is something you'll have to determine. After playing the SRX-11 each-note-sampled pianos for several years I really can't go back.
The advantage of the SC is that you can always upgrade to the full piano via the SRX expansion. Each-note-sampled is just one of the many issues with digital pianos. These things can bug one player and not the next. We are making gradual progress in this area. If the players don't push the manufacturers for better instruments, who will? #1830623 - 10/26/07 08:29 AM Re: Question - Roland Sonic Cell piano [] MP Hall of Fame Member Registered: 10/22/00 Posts: 7795 Loc: Ghost Planet.
Follow-up question: How would using the SRX-11 sound card in the Sonic Cell be any different than using the SRX-11 sound card in the Fantom-XR module? I can't think of a reason why they would. The SC and XR have the same FXs. When I compared identical sounds on both, side-by-side, I heard no differences between the SC and XR. I was unable to test the SRX-11 board in a side-by-side comparision. #1830652 - 10/26/07 09:42 AM Re: Question - Roland Sonic Cell piano [] Gold Member Registered: 01/14/06 Posts: 910 Loc: Ireland.
